No. 76
Dutch photographer and video artist Rineke Dijkstra studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam between 1981 and 1986. She worked as a formal portrait photographer until the early 1990s when she began to take her own style of portraits. Dijkstra mostly works in portrait series, capturing her subjects in natural undirected poses. Presenting a variety of models ranging from shop assistants to matadors she draws on the narrative of documentary portrait photography but also on the history of portrait painting allways respecting her model's need to present their own image.
